40: Slenderman
The Slenderman is a fictional supernatural character that originated as an internet meme created in 2009 in a chat forum. It was created by user Eric Knudsen, also known as "Victor Surge," as part of a Photoshop contest. Slenderman is depicted as a tall, thin figure with a featureless face wearing a black suit. He is often portrayed as lurking in the background of photographs, particularly those involving children, and is associated with abductions and mysterious disappearances.
Slenderman quickly became popular in internet folklore and inspired various works of fiction, including video games, short films, and literature. The character's popularity grew even further with the release of the game "Slender: The Eight Pages" in 2012.
While Slenderman is entirely fictional and originated as an internet meme, the character has become the subject of urban legends and creepypasta stories. In 2014, the character gained significant media attention after two young girls attempted to murder a classmate, claiming they did so to appease Slenderman, whom they believed to be real. This incident sparked discussions about internet culture, the influence of online content on individuals, and the potential impact of fictional characters on susceptible individuals.
